Medium Tillers

Let me tell you right from the start that I’m not a huge fan of medium size tillers. I do own one; but, I’m not a big fan. For that matter, I’m not generally in favor of many “middle of the road” options. Generally speaking, a middle of the road choice is a compromise. I understand buying the least expensive alternative. And, I understand buying the best that money can buy. But, I often – not always, but often - have a hard time with buying something in between. It’s almost always a compromise of some sort.

Popular Medium Size Tiller Brands

- Troy-Bilt
- Honda
- Craftsman (Sears)
- Cub Cadet
- Yard Machines
- Earthquake (Ardisam)
- Bolens
- Husqvarna
- Maxim
- Poulan

Quick Summary

Medium size tillers can almost always do what large tillers do; it just takes longer, and will usually require more effort on your part. Medium size tillers almost never can do what small or mini-tillers do. I think that’s why millions of gardeners tend to own a large tiller AND a mini-tiller.

Advantages of Medium Tillers

Medium size tillers will get tilling jobs done faster than a mini-tiller. Medium tillers generally have the power to turn soil over in one pass, and the tilling width is such that fewer passes are needed vs. small or medium sized tillers.

Some medium size rear-tine tillers offer some attachments, such as plows or furrowers.

Medium size tillers cost less than their big brothers, and will take up a little less floor space in the garage or shed. And, some medium size tillers can be more easily moved around or even lifted, if necessary.

At the smaller end of the spectrum, some medium sized tillers will easily fit into an SUV or mini-van.

Disadvantages of Medium Tillers

The major disadvantage of medium size tillers is that they are more expensive and require more storage space than their smaller counterparts. But these disadvantages aren’t very important if you have only need to till (not cultivate) a larger garden.

Medium size tillers will generally require a little more maintenance, because they are larger and more complex machines, with more parts, and will probably be used for more hours vs. small tillers.

Virtually all medium size tillers are single-purpose tools. While some tiller manufacturers offer attachments, most are designed solely for medium to large tilling projects. They are not designed for small area cultivation, and cannot be used for edging or dethatching the lawn. Indeed, most medium size tillers are harder to control than mini-tillers; so, attempting to till or cultivate near garden plants can be very risky.

Manual or Electric Start?

I haven’t seen any medium size tillers with an electric start option; generally, the engines used on medium size tillers are smaller than those used on large tillers and they’re relatively easy to start.

Can you Try Before You Buy?

If you are considering the purchase of a medium size tiller, it’s a good idea to “try before you buy” and, because they’re relatively easy to move around and transport, medium size tillers are very popular in the rental trade.

If you have a favorite brand that I haven’t listed, or if you have a comment regarding medium size tillers, I’d like to hear from you. Please email me at Oz@TheGardenOfOz.org.
